Mescal is an Irish-born actor. He became famous with his leading role in the miniseries *Normal People*, in which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Before starting acting, he was a Gaelic football player at the under-21 level for County Kildare and a member of Maynooth Football Club, where he played as a defender. His former coach Cian O'Neill commented on Paul Mescal as "very mature for someone so young. He had a strong physical presence. He was an excellent scorer." After sustaining a jaw injury, Paul had to stop playing Gaelic football.
In 2017, he earned his degree with a BA in Arts from Dublin's Trinity College University.
In 2019, he launched his acting career with an role in a pilot episode of the television series *Bump*.
In 2020, Paul Mescal secured his first major roles. He portrays Connell Waldron in the series *Normal People* alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and stars as Sean McKeogh in the series *The Deceived*.
The following year, 2021, Paul Mescal appears in his first major film, *The Lost Daughter* by Maggie Gyllenhaal, in the role of an Irish beach attendant working in Greece.
In the year 2023, he earned a nod in the Leading Actor category at the Oscars for his leading role in the feature film *Aftersun* by Charlotte Wells. Additionally, he got the lead role in *Gladiator 2* by Ridley Scott, with filming set to begin in June 2023.
